The range of restaurants offering healthy, local, ethical and sustainable food in Angers is growing all the time. Here are seven ideas for places making an effort to be eco-responsible!
Les Casse-Croûte de Suzy, the historic organic canteen
Founded in 2013 by Suzy and her mum, this excellent address with great values opens at lunchtime. In an alleyway close to Place du Ralliement, its small courtyard is the perfect spot to escape the heat. Here, you can sample organic, local, home-made food... On the menu: original recipes for pies, quiches, sandwiches and salads, a far cry from the usual bakery fare! As for desserts, to be enjoyed at the end of a meal or as an afternoon snack, they are both healthy and tasty, like its cheesecake, which has achieved cult status. For each dish, there are vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free options.
Chez marguerite, healthy cooking just like at grandma's house
Here, on rue Saint-Laud in Angers town centre, you can enjoy lunch and the delicious dishes, tarts and cakes concocted by the team at Chez Marguerite at any time of day. It's always home-made, with seasonal, local produce... We love the generous portions of lasagne, the delicious lemon meringue pie, the freshness of the ice cream sundaes or the watermelon and feta salad. On the terrace or in the cosy interior, make sure you try the weekend brunch.
Maison Watson, a vegan and sustainable restaurant
This restaurant-caterer on rue Plantagenêt offers 100% organic, home-cooked, plant-based cuisine for lunch and snacks. In the attractive dining room with its exposed stone walls, you can enjoy sophisticated, comforting dishes with flavours from near and far, as well as excellent desserts. Clémentine, the chef, knows how to make plant-based rhyme with tasty: we recommend trying the mafé or the burgers, as well as the spring rolls and the carrot cake! And a special mention for the zero waste approach!
Responsible eating at Potiron & Ciboulette
With its organic, gluten-free and lactose-free cuisine, this restaurant and tearoom on rue Baudrière follows a sustainable and ethical approach. Healthy and balanced, the menus on offer are often inspired by world cuisine. You'll regularly find tajine, dahl or pad thaï... with different options with or without meat. Vegetarian, vegan or flexitarian: whatever your diet, there's something here for you!
Pick # eat, vegan and eco-responsible street food
Fancy some fast food, but high quality, with good local produce and a sustainable approach? Look no further than Pick # Eat! Home-made fries and sauces, tasty vegetarian hot dogs with bread baked on the premises and great desserts are served in the dining room, on the terrace or to take away. We also liked the great drinks menu, the reusable containers used for takeaway desserts and the ethical delivery service offered by Frères Toques.
Resto-troc, an ethical and social approach
Every day, this community restaurant in Belle-Beille offers lunches prepared by a team of employees on integration schemes, in a spirit of combating waste. Prepared with freshly collected produce, the meals change every day and are perfect for sharing in a friendly atmosphere. At this community restaurant, everyone pays according to their income: for first-time diners, the menu is €4.5! The association also organises activities and events, such as family cookery workshops and barbecues on Wednesday lunchtimes in summer.
The savoury bonus at café cardinal
The café on rue des Arènes is now offering a snack bar at lunchtime, with scones and savoury sandwiches. It's just as good as the sweet menu, and home-made with only the best produce, with an eye on sustainability. We recommend you come and try it, and of course accompany your choice with an excellent coffee and a slice of banana bread to die for!
