The château ramparts
The power of the Angers fortress as seen from its walls! You need to look up to admire its 17 defensive towers, the highest of which rises to 50 metres.
Want to treat yourself to the most beautiful panorama of the city? Climb the towers and stroll along the approximately 500 metres of the covered walkway. In a few minutes, the gaze disappears beyond the Maine and the city roofs...
An invigorating experience to enjoy alone or with family during your visit to Château d’Angers.
The Porte des Champs
Although it’s more discreet today at the back of the monument, the Porte des Champs was the main entrance to Château d'Angers in the Middle Ages. A strategic military point, source of passage and so potentially of danger! For great ills, wonderful remedies, with the construction of two portcullises, including the oldest in France dated so far.
The inner courtyard
Château d’Angers’ inner courtyard is divided into two visitable areas: on one side, the seigniorial courtyard, also called the Haute-Cour with the royal residence, Saint-Jean-Baptiste chapel as well as the gatehouse. On the other, the Basse-Cour, comprising the Governor's residence and the garrison courtyard. Imagine yourself as a great lord reigning over your subjects...
The terrace and gardens
Behind the stone and iron of the fortress lies a whole world of contentment and poetry. Welcome to the gardens of Château d’Angers! Enjoy daydreaming among the lilies, wild orchids and rosebushes around the hanging gardens, or strolling past the plants on the ramparts and perfectly pruned yew beds. Lovers of ancient culture will also find what they’re looking for in the heart of the vineyards and the site’s vegetable garden. Bird enthusiasts will also enjoy this site, recognised as an LPO Refuge for its biodiversity.
The Gallery of the Apocalypse
In this museum space, you’ll find the monumental Tapestry of the Apocalypse, the first medieval comic strip. Its extraordinary dimensions (103 metres long by 4.5 metres high), its record long life (600 years) and the incredible finesse of its creation make it a unique piece.
