day one of your stay in Angers: exploring the city-centre
This summer in Angers, make sure you explore both sides of the river Maine. With its green banks, this river running right through the middle of town is the lifeblood of Angers. It’s impossible to miss Angers Castle, which towers over the Maine up above. Stop for a while on the Bout de Monde promenade to admire one of the city’s finest views. From here continue on into the old town – if you like historical buildings, you won’t be disappointed. In a stroll of a few hours, it is possible to see different architectural styles, from medieval constructions built in schist to more contemporary buildings with slate roofs, as well as Renaissance-period architecture in tufa stone which is what gives Angers its ever-so special white resplendence. Step through the doors of Saint-Maurice Cathedral and the Galerie David d’Angers and stop in front of the funny figures on the Maison d’Adam... when wandering the streets of Angers, you will want to pause, look up high and admire the finer details.
Head to the Esplanade Coeur de Maine on the waterfront to laze on a spot of grass and enjoy some riverside café fun. In the evening, let yourself be tempted by the menu of a wine bar and sample some local specialities. Once night has fallen, the Balade du Roi René sound and light show can begin! Through a series of illuminations, the castle tells the story of King René and the women that marked his life. Five emblematic venues are open free to the public for the occasion.
This summer, Angers is alive with both history and summer entertainment. Drop in at the Tourist Office for expert advice or for gifts and souvenirs from Angers to take home.
