Domaine Taillandier

To the west of Angers, on the banks of the Loire, are a series of vineyards that produce some of the finest appellations in the Loire Valley. These are the Savennières, first produced by monks in the 11th century who recognised the distinctive flavour that could be produced by planting vines on the sandstone and shale south-facing slopes of the great river. Today, the monks have disappeared, replaced by viticulteurs with names you will probably recognise. Amongst them is Domaine Taillandier.  

In 1989, Marc & Eric Taillandier planted their first vines in 20 acres of this fertile and sandy soil. Another 20 acres later, the Taillander brothers created the 'Domaine Taillander' with a wide selection of whites (Savennières and Coteaux de Loire) and from their vineyard close to Beaulieu-sur-Layon, a distinctive Anjou Rouge.  

You can visit the Taillandier wine cellar at Varennes and learn a lot more about their methods of harvesting the grapes and tasting the resulting white and reds. Groups are also welcome but you must make a reservation.
